"Agents, welcome to our GHQ. Please follow me; it's time for your mission briefing..."

This is how I used to welcome customers a few years ago when I worked at La Ligue des Gentlemen, the best escape game in Nantes 🕵‍♂️

Joining the immersive world of escape games has been a game-changer (literally!) in my design journey. As a designer, having the role of a game master has opened my eyes to the incredible synergy between gaming and design.

Here are a few reasons why 👇

Being a game master is about providing an entire experience:

La Ligue des Gentlemen was an excellent mentor for that: creating our own chic secret agent outfits and ensuring we used the right words in front of clients was the best way to start the gaming experience as soon as customers opened the door. We weren't receiving "customers" but "agents". They weren't coming for a "game" or a "reservation" but for a "mission" - I promise that makes all the difference. Crafting a narrative that captivates, making your customer the main character, is the key to providing a great experience, and this can be translated into a design journey as well 🗝 ✨

Designing is exactly like solving a puzzle:

Each element—the logo, colour palette, typography—is clue, a piece waiting to be strategically placed. Just like a well-designed escape room, a successful brand should guide customers through a journey, leaving them with a sense of fulfilment and connection. 🔍

Games thrive on interaction, and I carry that principle into my design philosophy:

Whether it's through user interfaces, physical spaces, or branding materials, fostering meaningful interactions is the secret to creating memorable experiences. That is the first thing we hear when debriefing a mission (I promise there are no spoilers): "I loved it when this magically opened," "I still can't believe I put this on that, and the entire room turned red," "We all jumped when that action revealed that thing." Besides providing a nice experience, these interactions create unique and long-lasting memories! 👏

Now, agents, your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to tell me about the most memorable interactions you've witnessed. Will you be capable of doing so? 😉
